چکیده

Introduction The conservation world is approaching the consensus that rehabilitation is now a crucial part of the conservation process for many primates (Myers et al., 2000). Rehabilitation seeks to remove orphaned animals from the illegal wildlife trade and provide them with an environment, where they are (1) encouraged to become more self-sufficient and (2) provided with the opportunity to live as they should in the wild. Ultimately, the goal is for effective conservation of wild populations aided by rehabilitation (Kierulff and de Oliveria, 1996). Rehabilitation projects can also act as education and research centres to communicate the pet trade problem to people and to raise money. It must be noted that combining tourism with rehabilitation has failed in the past, producing rehabilitant animals that are still attached to humans. Rehabilitants and visitors should not mix.

Activity Budgets of Two Captive White-Handed Gibbon (Hylobates lar) Populations Housed in Different Types of Environments

Housing captive primates in environments representative of their wild habitat in many cases can be challenging. Captive white-handed gibbons can be housed in a caged environment or on an island surrounded by a moat. It has been hypothesized that the quality of the captive environment can affect gibbon behavior, as expressed in (or by) their activity budgets. The researcher observed the activity...

A Reassessment of Age of Sexual Maturity in Gibbons (Hylobates spp.)

From studies of both wild and captive animals, gibbons are thought to reach sexual maturity at about 6 to 8 years of age, and the siamang (Hylobates syndactylus) at about 8 to 9 years. However, a review of the literature reveals that in most cases the exact age of the maturing animals was not known and had to be estimated. This study presents seven case reports on captive gibbons of known age. ...

Detection of Salmonella spp. from some wild captive herbivores in Iran and determination of serogroup, antibiotic susceptibility and presence of invA gene in the isolated strains

Salmonella spp. are zoonotic enteric bacteria able to infect humans, livestock and wildlife. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Salmonella (spp.) and to determine antibiotic susceptibility, serogrouping and presence of invA gene (Salmonella Invasion Gene A) in the detected strains in wild captive herbivores in Iran. The fecal samples of 103 animals from 8 different speci...

Detection of verotoxin (Shiga-like toxin)-producing and eae harboring Escherichia coli in some wild captive and domestic Equidae and Canidae

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of STEC and EPEC strains and E. coli O157 serogroup in some Equidae and Canidae. The fecal samples of 79 animals from 6 different species were evaluated for presence of these strains. All the Isolates were tested for virulence genes using multiplex-PCR. Non-sorbitol fermenting (NSF) Escherichia coli isolates and positive strains for virule...

A Chromosomal Inversion Unique to the Northern White-Cheeked Gibbon

The gibbon family belongs to the superfamily Hominoidea and includes 15 species divided into four genera. Each genus possesses a distinct karyotype with chromosome numbers varying from 38 to 52. This diversity is the result of numerous chromosomal changes that have accumulated during the evolution of the gibbon lineage, a quite unique feature in comparison with other hominoids and most of the o...
